Thailand and Bhutan are enhancing their collaboration in sustainable tourism. Recently, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hosted a delegation from Bhutan’s Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators (ABTO). From June 20 to 23, 2025, the delegation examined Thailand’s sustainability practices at both policy and community levels. This visit marks a significant step in the partnership between Thailand and Bhutan in sustainable tourism.
The visit emphasizes both countries’ dedication to responsible tourism and aims to foster stronger cooperation under the “Two countries, One destination” framework. This initiative focuses on shared learning, joint product development, and meaningful travel experiences centered around sustainability.
The program began with a welcome meeting led by Ms. Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific. She was joined by Ms. Patsri Permwongsaenee, Executive Director for ASEAN, South Asia and South Pacific Region; Ms. Eblarp Sripirom, Executive Director of the Tourism Products Department; and Mr. Santi Sawaengcharoen, Deputy Executive Director, Office of the Governor.
TAT presented its strategic direction for sustainable tourism in line with international standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The session featured case studies of Thai businesses known for their environmental initiatives, such as The Westin Grande Sukhumvit which received the Green Hotel Standard Plus certification for 2024–2027.
From June 21 to 23, the delegation visited Nan province to observe practical models of sustainable tourism. They met Mrs. Wilaiwan Budasa, Vice Governor of Nan, to discuss regional cooperation and inclusive tourism development. Visits included recognized hospitality businesses like Nan Boutique Hotel and Resort, Cocoa Valley, Saengthong Resort, and Pupakannapua—all certified under various schemes such as Thailand Tourism Awards and Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR).
A tram tour of Nan Old Town showcased its achievement as a Green Destinations Gold Level awardee—the first recipient in ASEAN and Asia in 2025—demonstrating leadership in creative urban development.
This collaboration builds on previous engagements at Thailand Travel Mart Plus (TTM+) 2025 held from June 5–7 in Khao Lak where Bhutan participated alongside Greater Mekong Subregion countries.
