International style icon Susanne Bartsch is set to open a new exhibition, “Susanne Bartsch – Transformation!”, at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich on June 20, 2025. The event coincides with the Zurich Pride Festival and highlights Bartsch’s influence on fashion, performance, and LGBTQ+ culture.
The exhibition is structured like a night out in six acts: “Welcome!”, “Hair and Make-up”, “Getting Ready”, “Queuing”, “The Club”, and “Lounge”. It features over 35 of Bartsch’s iconic outfits and includes archival videos, fashion ephemera, and rare photography. Visitors will experience curated installations that celebrate individuality, creativity, and community. Bartsch remarked, “This exhibition is not just about clothes—it’s about celebrating individuality, creativity, and community. It’s such an honor and I’m thrilled to bring my world back to Switzerland, where my journey began.”
Born in Switzerland, Bartsch left for London at age 17 before gaining prominence in New York during the 1980s. Her parties became hubs for queer artists and performers. In 1989, her Love Ball raised awareness for HIV/AIDS.
Bartsch’s avant-garde fashion pays homage to Switzerland’s textile heritage, particularly St. Gallen’s renowned embroidery craftsmanship. This legacy has influenced many artists and fashion figures.
An Instagram Live event with Susanne Bartsch and Out Magazine Editor-in-Chief Daniel Reynolds is scheduled for June 5 at noon EST to discuss the exhibition. They will also raffle a trip to Switzerland during this session.
The exhibition runs from June 20 to December 7, 2025. It is curated by Meret Ernst with co-curators Susanne Bartsch and Waleed Khairzada.
The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich is known for its significant design collection of over half a million objects across three locations in Zurich.
