Royal Caribbean Group is preparing to launch its second Icon Class ship, Star of the Seas. Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean, shared insights about the new vessel and what it means for the company’s future.
Bayley described how the Icon Class aims to offer more options and innovative features for guests. “You know, the term ‘icon’ is often thrown around in corporate circles; it’s more about investments and returns. But for our guests, it’s about experiences. When families step onboard our ships, they’re choosing a blend of ship, destination, and vibe. With Star of the Seas, we’re expanding their options, we’re giving them more beautifully designed ships, more innovative features, more memories waiting to be made. From Icon’s smashing success, the trajectory is clear. When our guests are delighted and our shareholders see the rewards, everyone wins. The Icon Class isn’t just growing; it’s a journey of pushing boundaries, creating products that truly resonate. This is what makes Royal Caribbean a pioneer in the space,” he said.
Discussing design philosophy, Bayley explained that Star of the Seas builds on lessons learned from its predecessor: “Think of Star as the sister ship to Icon—built on the same DNA but refined through lessons learned. Like our Oasis or Quantum Classes, each iteration takes the core concept and elevates it. Icon was the prototype, and Star is its confident sequel. We made minor tweaks—upgraded restaurant concepts, fresh color palettes, lighting, and layout adjustments – fundamental improvements that derived from real-world feedback. The essence remains the same: a vessel that embodies innovation, fun, and unforgettable memories. It’s about evolution, with each ship building on its predecessor to offer an even more spectacular experience.”
Among new features aboard Star of the Seas is Sailor—the ship’s Chief Dog Officer—and entertainment updates such as “Back to the Future” The Musical. Dining concepts have also been refreshed based on guest feedback.
“First, Sailor is the number one feature onboard; she’s the ship’s new Chief Dog Officer. She’s adorable and destined to be a fan favorite. Beyond that, we’re constantly refreshing entertainment, like ‘Back to the Future’ the musical, a blockbuster Broadway hit. Restaurants? We swap menus, tweak concepts, keep the experience fresh and exciting. Innovation is ongoing; every voyage is a new chapter,” Bayley noted.
The development process began in 2017 with significant challenges including delays due to the pandemic but continued collaboration between teams enabled completion of this new class of ship.
“The journey started back in 2017 with Icon, an ambitious five-to-six-year marathon of design, planning, and collaboration. The pandemic paused us, but it also reinforced our resilience. Building a new class of ship is a massive feat… Every ship is unique… Watching these ships come to life after years of effort is profoundly rewarding,” Bayley said.
On selecting Diana Ross as Godmother for Star of the Seas: “Great ideas often evolve through collaboration… Diana Ross fit perfectly… She’s a true star… When we proposed her… ‘Wow,’ Diana Ross… That’s how you know you’ve got it right.”
Bayley shared his personal favorites onboard—including Izumi’s hibachi restaurant and Sorrento’s pizza—as well as activities like spin classes and walks with Sailor.
He also discussed upcoming destinations such as Perfect Day Mexico—which will feature attractions like what may become one of world’s longest lazy rivers—and Royal Beach Clubs in Nassau (Paradise Island), Cozumel (Mexico), and Lelepa (Vanuatu). These additions are part of Royal Caribbean’s efforts to expand its Ultimate Destinations portfolio with both adventure-oriented attractions and curated relaxation experiences tailored to guest preferences.
Bayley emphasized environmental considerations at these destinations by noting plans for animal sanctuaries as part of Perfect Day Mexico.
Reflecting on launching new ships he said: “There’s something truly special about seeing years of vision and hard work come to life… It all culminates in that moment when the ship sails into port…”
As Royal Caribbean continues developing new vessels such as Legend of the Seas—currently seeking its godmother—the company maintains focus on innovation within cruise experiences for travelers worldwide.
