The Minister of Tourism has addressed the recent update by the United States Department of State regarding its travel advisory for South Africa. The minister stated, “We respect the sovereign right of all nations to provide guidance to their citizens travelling abroad.” This follows a meeting between Presidents Ramaphosa and Trump and subsequent media coverage.

The ministry emphasized its commitment to ensuring visitor safety, comfort, and enjoyment in South Africa. The country is known for its natural beauty, cultural diversity, and hospitality. While acknowledging challenges such as crime, which are common globally, the majority of international visitors reportedly have positive experiences.

Visitor safety is a national priority tackled through coordinated efforts among government entities, law enforcement, the tourism sector, and local communities. Established safety measures include increased security presence at key tourism locations with trained Tourism Monitors and ongoing collaboration for proactive safety monitoring.

Despite concerns raised by the travel advisory, demand from U.S. travelers remains strong. In 2024, arrivals from the U.S. returned to pre-pandemic levels with America surpassing the United Kingdom as South Africa’s largest source market. In early 2025 alone, South Africa received 111,491 visitors from the USA.

Travelers are encouraged to maintain vigilance similar to that exercised when visiting any international destination. The minister urged global media outlets and government agencies to report on South Africa accurately and balance isolated incidents against broader positive experiences reported by many travelers.

Engagements with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation are ongoing concerning this matter. The minister reassured that South Africa remains open and welcoming while committed to providing a safe journey for all visitors.

South Africa continues to invite travelers worldwide to explore its landscapes, culture, and hospitality.
