Holland America Line has introduced a new retail product for its guests: a set of four coasters made from upcycled carpet previously used on board several of its ships. The initiative is part of the cruise line’s efforts to support recycling and circular economy practices within the industry.
The coasters were developed in partnership with Danish carpet manufacturer Dansk Wilton, marking the first time recycled carpet products have been offered for sale in the cruise sector. They are available exclusively in Holland America Line’s onboard shops.
“This project reflects our ongoing journey toward more sustainable practices,” said My Nguyen, director of interior design at Holland America Line. “These coasters are a tangible example of how discarded resources can be given a second life in the very environment they came from. We are proud to be the first in the industry to partner with Dansk and innovate carpet waste into beautiful usable products that our guests can enjoy.”
To date, 12,000 coasters have been produced using 3,300 pounds of carpet waste collected during dry-dock projects on three ships: Oosterdam, Eurodam, and Nieuw Amsterdam over the past two years. The material used is Dansk Wilton’s ReBond textile, which is also featured in Holland America Line’s architectural signage.
This product launch is part of Dansk Wilton’s Re:Shape initiative, which focuses on transforming and reusing carpet waste through design. In addition to coasters, future plans include creating notebooks, postcards, door signs, artwork, and other items from repurposed Holland America Line carpets for sale on board.
The coaster sets will be available fleetwide by October 2025.
