Hilton has announced plans to significantly expand its presence in Africa, aiming to triple the number of its hotels on the continent. The company intends to open more than 100 new hotels in countries such as Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Angola, and Madagascar over the coming years. This expansion is expected to create approximately 18,000 jobs.
Carlos Khneisser, Hilton’s chief development officer for the Middle East & Africa, stated: “We are thrilled to announce several new hotel agreements which significantly expand our footprint in Africa, a continent brimming with potential and opportunity.” He emphasized Hilton’s commitment to supporting Africa’s hospitality sector by partnering with local owners.
In Angola, Hilton has signed agreements for three properties. These include two hotels in Luanda under the Hilton Hotels & Resorts and Hilton Garden Inn brands and one in Cabinda under the DoubleTree by Hilton brand.
The company is also entering Benin with a new hotel in Cotonou scheduled to open in 2028. This project aims to enhance Benin’s capacity for hosting international conferences and events.
In Madagascar, Hilton plans to re-enter with two properties in Antananarivo set for completion by 2028. Meanwhile, Nigeria will see expansions including The Wave Hotel Abuja Jabi under the Curio Collection by Hilton and other projects slated for Lagos Ikeja and Kano.
Further developments are planned across West Africa and East Africa. In Ghana, Hampton by Hilton Accra Airport is set to open near Kotoka International Airport. Ethiopia will see two new DoubleTree properties while Tanzania welcomes Canopy by Hilton Zanzibar The Burj.
North African expansions include tripling its portfolio in Egypt and doubling it in Morocco. A notable upcoming opening is DoubleTree by Hilton Fes Golf adjacent to a golf course near Fes’s cultural attractions.
Recent openings include Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof in South Africa and DoubleTree by Hilton Addis Ababa Airport in Ethiopia. Later this year will mark the debut of Hilton Accra Cantonments as part of an upscale development project.
Hilton currently operates 63 hotels across Africa with over 100 more under development. All these establishments participate in the company’s loyalty program which boasts over 218 million members globally.
