The inaugural Glamping Expo 2025 took place from June 20-21 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, aiming to position South Africa as a key player in the glamping tourism sector. The event brought together stakeholders from various parts of the industry, including tent manufacturers, eco-conscious designers, government officials, investors, and influencers.

Thembisile Sehloho, Chief Marketing Officer of South African Tourism, emphasized the significance of the expo in her opening address. “This glamping expo is happening on African soil. Africa is taking a stand, and we are leading in places where the world never thought we would. Beyond travel, this expo will impact development and bring opportunities to life in our townships, villages, and small dorpies. We’re re-imagining an ecosystem.”

Gugu Sithole, Glamping Expo Lead, shared insights into the event’s creation: “This was our first expo, and we managed to deliver a great event. The industry received it very positively. We’re excited about how it will introduce South Africans to a new form of travel.”

A panel titled ‘Governmental Roles: Policies and Support for the Glamping Sector’ focused on aligning government policy with industry innovation. Sehloho pointed out that “the numbers don’t lie” when supporting this evolving sector.

Nonnie Kubeka from Gauteng Tourism Authority described the expo as a ‘transformative movement’ combining innovation with sustainability: “As Gauteng, we are positioning ourselves as a destination where luxury meets sustainability.”

Frans Vermaak from Canvas and Tent highlighted sustainable practices within the industry: “We ensure there’s only about 3% wastage when we cut our fabrics.” This waste minimization effort supports local communities by donating leftover fabric for crafting goods.

Siphelele Luthuli of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spoke on regenerative tourism: “Leave the place better than you found it.”

Curteis Roberts from Experience Africa Safaris noted glamping’s appeal lies in connecting back to nature while balancing modern comforts.

The expo charted a path for future tourism development in South Africa by integrating luxury with sustainability and community empowerment. Sehloho concluded by stating that South Africa aims to lead in global glamping conversations: “We are inviting the world to experience this new chapter.”
