With thousands of fans arriving in Australia for the Qatar Airways British & Irish Lions Tour 2025, IHG Hotels & Resorts has provided a memorable experience as the Official Hotel Partner. Rugby superfan Lawrence Hanlen, who traveled from Gibraltar, was surprised by Wallabies legend Michael Hooper upon arrival at the airport. Instead of a standard transfer to InterContinental Sydney, Hanlen received a private ride with Hooper himself.
During the journey, Hooper shared locker room stories and offered local tips about Sydney. Upon reaching InterContinental Sydney, British & Irish Lions player Andrew Porter helped with luggage while Tommy Freeman handled check-in details. Finn Russell later presented Hanlen with gifts including a tour ball and signed jersey delivered by Hooper.
Michael Hooper expressed his excitement: “It was such a great experience working with IHG to pull off this experience for Lawrence… The friendly banter and rugby stories started from the minute I opened the door, till the moment I said goodbye.”
Lawrence Hanlen described it as “a dream come true,” adding that he had followed rugby for over 45 years but nothing prepared him for this welcome.
IHG Hotels & Resorts has been creating unique experiences during the Tour, offering exclusive perks and access for IHG One Rewards members worldwide. Over eight million points have been redeemed on experiences like Platinum tickets to sold-out matches.
Matt Tripolone, Managing Director of IHG Hotels & Resorts Australasia & Pacific, commented: “As the Official Hotel Partner of the Tour, we wanted to celebrate this momentous sporting event in true IHG fashion… We’re passionate about collaborating with our partners to deliver extraordinary experiences for our guests.”
