Copenhagen will host several major food festivals in August and September, offering a range of culinary experiences for both locals and visitors. The Copenhagen Cooking Festival is scheduled from August 20 to 29, bringing together restaurants, chefs, cultural institutions, and food enthusiasts to highlight the city’s diverse food scene. This year’s theme focuses on sustainable gastronomy, with top chefs and entrepreneurs presenting innovative approaches that balance environmental responsibility with flavor.
One event at the festival, “A tribute to the Danish hot dog,” marks the centennial of the Danish Pølsevogn by serving a four-course hot dog tasting menu. Another highlight is Smørrebrødets Day 2021, celebrated from August 26 to 29. The Smørrebrøds Battle will feature leading restaurants such as Michelin-recommended Selma showcasing their versions of the traditional open-faced sandwich with an emphasis on sustainability.
Special dining events include “400 Year Anniversary: Bangkok & Copenhagen,” where Holy Krapow restaurant will serve Thai street food paired with Danish beers in recognition of historic ties between Denmark and Thailand.
Copenhagen Beer Week also returns during this period, featuring events like “Traditional smørrebrød with a twist” at Københavner Caféen and seafood dishes paired with Champagne Beer from Mikkeller Baghaven at Tholstrups Restaurant.
In Aarhus, Denmark’s largest Food Festival takes place from September 5 to 7 at Tangkrogen. Over 30,000 attendees are expected as more than 250 producers, chefs, and artisans offer tastings, workshops, and activities across a large festival area. Organized by the Food Organisation of Denmark (FOOD), the event aims to foster appreciation for Danish cuisine while promoting sustainability and high-quality ingredients.
Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen will hold its own Smørrebrødsfestival and Food & Wine Festival from September 11 to 19. Visitors can sample classic Danish dishes in various park venues and browse a weekend market featuring products from local producers.
Following these events is Denmark’s Oyster Festival in October at UNESCO Wadden Sea National Park in Southern Denmark. Guests can participate in oyster safaris and watch top chefs compete for the title of Oyster Chef of the Year.
