Tourist activities in Citrus County led to over $526 million in visitor spending in 2024, as detailed in the Visitor Economic Impact report by Discover Crystal River Florida. This bureau is responsible for promoting tourism across Crystal River, Homosassa, Inverness, and Floral City. The findings were presented at a June 11 Board of County Commissioners meeting, highlighting the significant positive influence of visitors on the local economy and community.

The report states that 1.7 million visitors contributed to this spending figure, comprising 1.1 million day-trippers and 565,152 overnight visitors. Of the total spending, 27% benefited local businesses such as accommodations, arts & entertainment, attractions, food & beverage, outdoor recreation, and retail sectors. It also identifies top original markets like Tampa-St. Petersburg (Sarasota), Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne from within the state, and Atlanta and New York from out-of-state.

Auvis Cole, Tourism Director for Discover Crystal River Florida remarked: “This report reaffirms what we’ve long known: tourism is not just a driver of our economy; it’s a reflection of our community’s strength and spirit.” He added that despite challenges such as two hurricanes during the year, “we didn’t just recover; we rallied.”

The comprehensive report also reviews marketing performance metrics including website analytics, social media statistics, and public relations placements. A map detailing sales department efforts further illustrates how Discover Crystal River Florida marketed Citrus County to both U.S. and international audiences.
