Chiang Mai tops Travel + Leisure’s best cities list in Asia

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced that Chiang Mai has been named the top city in Asia by the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025. The city also achieved a second-place ranking globally, reinforcing its status as a popular destination worldwide.

Chiang Mai topped the list of Asia’s 15 Best Cities with a Reader Score of 91.94. The city received praise for its friendly locals and excellent food, along with attractions such as ancient temples, lively night markets, and mountain scenery. Ethical elephant encounters were highlighted by travelers as well.

Bangkok, another Hall of Fame honoree like Chiang Mai, ranked third in Asia and fourth globally with a Reader Score of 91.34. It was noted for its dynamic energy and cultural depth, offering world-class cuisine, iconic temples, street markets, and vibrant nightlife.

In the category of Best Islands in Asia featuring only the top five islands, Thailand secured two spots: Phuket ranked fourth with a Reader Score of 89.47 for its beaches and luxury resorts; Ko Samui followed in fifth place with a score of 89.31 for its relaxed atmosphere and tropical beauty.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, stated: “We are proud that Thailand continues to stand out in travellers’ hearts. Chiang Mai’s top ranking in Asia, along with strong performances by Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui, speaks to the richness and diversity of experiences our country offers.”

The awards are based on nearly 180,000 reader submissions and over 657,000 votes across criteria including sights and landmarks, culture, food friendliness shopping value—areas where Thailand consistently excels.
