13 ways to enjoy late summer activities across New York State

Back-to-school season is approaching, but summer activities in New York State are still plentiful. Families can enjoy seasonal foods, drive-in movies, and amusement parks before the school year begins.

Visitors to the Bronx Zoo can see penguins, cheetahs, sloths, and over 11,000 animals. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse features “eletwins” Yaad and Tukada. Buffalo Zoo hosts the Zoomagination Lantern Festival until October 5. At Zoo New York in Watertown, visitors can learn about native species like bobcats and bald eagles.

The Great New York State Fair in Syracuse runs from August 20 to September 1 with rides and performances. Other fairs include Erie County Fair (August 6-17) and Dutchess County Fair (August 19-24). The Sterling Renaissance Festival continues on weekends until August 17.

Aerial adventure parks offer ziplining and ropes courses statewide. WildPlay Jones Beach is open until November 2 with a variety of challenges for all ages.

Baseball fans can watch major league teams like the Yankees or Mets or attend minor league games across the state. Other events include Watkins Glen International’s U.S. Vintage Grand Prix (September 4-7) and Saratoga Race Course’s Travers Stakes (August 23).

Amusement parks such as LEGOLAND in Goshen provide family fun with rides and water slides. Six Flags Darien Lake remains open until September 1.

State parks offer outdoor experiences like Niagara Falls tours or hiking at Letchworth State Park’s waterfalls.

Aquariums across New York feature marine life exhibits. Long Island Aquarium offers sea lion shows while Via Aquarium has over 2,000 sea creatures.

Beaches such as Coopers Beach in Southampton provide relaxation opportunities alongside scenic views.

Drive-in theaters present films under the stars with options like Unadilla Drive-In offering mountain views during screenings.

Music lovers can attend concerts at venues like Saratoga Performing Arts Center featuring artists including Chicago and Jonas Brothers.

Water sports enthusiasts have options ranging from parasailing above Lake George to kayaking at Green Lakes State Park.

Foodies can savor ice cream from Martha’s in Lake George or lobster rolls at Lobster Roll aka LUNCH in the Hamptons.

Resorts like The Sagamore Resort on Lake George offer luxury accommodations with activities such as golfing or boat tours available nearby.
